Introduction

The 'New Deal for Communities' {NDC} is a' flags ship' initiative for urban renewal and communities' regeneration; it seeks to empower and enable individuals and group to build cohesive and prosperous communities. This project is primarily designed to reduce crime, youth disorder and anti social behaviour for all young people aged 10-19 years in the NDC area.

Project Overview

This project is designed to provide opportunities for all young people aged 10-19 years resident in the NDC area to develop their personal and social skills. The youth Inclusion Program in the past provided intensive one to one targeted work with 50 young people aged 13-16 years deemed 'at risk' of social exclusion or involvement in crime and their peers (Burrow, 2005). Examples of work carried out with young people in the past has included detached youth work, group work via the Key Fund, learning and educational opportunities and fun open access activities such as motor projects, peer education, health advice, basic skills, drug awareness, Go Karting, arts and crafts and music workshops.

The evaluation of the YIP highlighted that overall the YIP is highly successful in terms of its contribution to NDC Crime and Community Safety theme outcomes and the wider citywide Community Safety Strategy.

This project will build on the success of the original YIP project. The three core aims of the project are to:

Reduce crime, youth disorder and anti-social behaviour;

Provide a generic youth resource via targeted and detached youth work for all young people aged 10-19 years old residing in the NDC area;

Increase the participation of young people and residents in the provision of co-ordinated youth work and in decision making processes.

Benefits of the Project

The project will contribute greatly towards reducing crime, anti-social behaviour and youth disorder occurring in the NDC area. The project will achieve this by identifying and engaging with the 50 young people most 'at risk' of social exclusion aged 13-16 years old living in the NDC area. Project staff will offer intensive one to one interventional work to those who need it most on a voluntary basis. The project will impact on other issues occurring in the NDC area including low levels of school attendance, family problems, drug and alcohol abuse and disaffection.

The project will provide a safe, accessible space where children and young people aged 10-19 years old resident in the NDC area can meet and socialise. The project will provide detached youth work and young people will be able to gain access to free, fun, enjoyable activities, which will enhance their confidence and social and educational development. Activities and training programmes provided via the project include:

Outdoor activities, activity days, sports tournaments, Army days, Go Karting, residential weekends, Summer and Easter holiday activities;

The Volunteers Course, Sexual Health Course, Drugs Awareness Course, Core Skills Course and Basic Computing Skills, all accredited through the Open College Network.
